Reflective writing- postcard

My postcard from the womb was the first and easiest prompt I responded to. It followed a lighthearted conversation with a friend about how the nurturing and encapsulating qualities of being oblivious and completely provided for in the womb would made it an inviting place to retreat to after a long day. The comical aspect of the postcard along with the religious connotations of the postcard is something I really like about the piece as through humour, it communicates the message and relates it clearly to the viewer. The clouds and use of gold ink to highlight to umbilical chord is reminiscent ennobles the womb to an almost utopia or paradise, which I really enjoyed playing with. I wanted the biological diagram to be romanticised and glorified in a way that would make the viewer almost long to be wrapped up and sheltered like the fetus in the postcard. The illustrative and colourful quality is reminiscent of Grayson perry's pottery and tapestry and I could definitely see myself developing this piece in ceramics as its delicate nature and process share themes. There is a political undertone to the piece also that I enjoyed touching on but could explore further- instead of presenting an overt political issue or current affair, I decided to tap into the vastly shared desire to take shelter and be blissfully unaware of the bombardment of negative and devastating news over the last two years. The womb suggests a place before consciousness where one could take refuge from the death, devastation, social injustice and loss of the past year and revert back to more simpler times. Nevertheless, despite however comforting this ideal is, it is impossible in the same way that is it is impossible and detrimental to stay ignorant in the current climate. I would really like to develop this ideas as I find the themes to be really provocative and exciting.
